Getting Better Recording Performance

Keeping up with the screen at a high frame rate.

Recording takes real work from your Mac's CPU, GPU and drive. When recordings drop frames or the recorded application slows down, these are the things to adjust.

How can I get better recording performance?

Close non-essential background programs, record the smallest area you can, and lower the recording quality in Screenflick's preferences. Keep reading.

How do I record a game without slowing it down?

Turn V-Sync on in the game. Keep reading.

Three Things That Help #

  • Close non-essential background work. Make sure processes that use the CPU or hard drive, such as Time Machine and Spotlight, aren't running.
  • Record the smallest area you can. The smaller the area, the less work Screenflick has to do, which gives higher recording rates.
  • Lower the recording quality. In the Advanced tab of Screenflick's preferences, move the quality slider down a bit. The lowest setting uses quite a bit less CPU than the highest, at the expense of some quality, which may not matter in your case.

Games and Other High Performance Graphics #

When recording video games, or other programs with high performance OpenGL graphics, make sure the game has V-Sync turned on. With V-Sync off, the frame rate of the game can go above the maximum of the display, and above the recording frame rate chosen in Screenflick. That steals processing power away from Screenflick.
