Choosing Which Applications to Record

Recording only some applications, or everything except some.

Screenflick normally records everything that's on the screen. The "Record windows from" setting lets you pick which applications' windows are recorded instead. You can record only the applications you choose, or everything except the applications you choose. The audio from those applications is included or left out too.

The Record Windows From Setting #

The "Record windows from" pop-up menu is in the Record view. It has three choices:

Choice What gets recorded
All Apps Everything on the screen. This is the normal setting.
Only… Only the windows of the applications you pick.
Except… The windows of every application except the ones you pick.

You pick applications, not individual windows, so choosing an application covers all of its windows.

Choosing the Applications #

To pick the applications

  1. Choose "Only…" or "Except…" from the "Record windows from" pop-up menu.
  2. In the list that appears, turn on the checkbox next to each application you want.
  3. Click anywhere outside the list to close it.

The list shows the applications that are running, in alphabetical order. At the top is "macOS UI Services", which stands for parts of macOS itself, such as Control Center, Spotlight, and the on-screen displays that appear when you change the volume or brightness. The list's heading tells you what your choices will do. With "Only…" it says "Record Windows and Audio from these Applications", and with "Except…" it says "Don't Record Windows or Audio from these Applications".

There are "Check All" and "Uncheck All" buttons, and the list is made big enough to show the applications without scrolling when it can. After you pick, the names of your applications appear next to the pop-up menu, along with a button to change the list.

What's Checked to Start With #

When you switch from "All Apps" to "Only…", the Dock and "macOS UI Services" are already checked, so the recording still has the usual parts of the Mac around the applications you add. When you switch from "All Apps" to "Except…", nothing is checked. Switching between "Only…" and "Except…" keeps your list.

Applications you've checked stay in the list even when they're not running, so you can set it up once and use it any time those applications are open.

Audio #

On macOS 13 and later, system audio follows your choice. With "Only…", audio is recorded only from the applications you checked. With "Except…", audio from the applications you checked is left out. So "Except…" is an easy way to keep, for example, a music player out of a recording of everything else. See Recording System Audio.

Requirements #

"Only…" and "Except…" need macOS 12.3 or later. Recording with a transparent desktop is only available when "All Apps" is chosen.
