Recording the Microphone

Choosing a microphone, and which of its channels to record.

Screenflick can record audio from a microphone, or from any other audio device. It's recorded as its own stereo track, separate from the system audio, so the two can be exported separately or mixed down into a single track later.

Choosing a Microphone #

In the Record view, turn on "Record Microphone" and choose the device from the pop-up menu below it.

macOS also needs to have given Screenflick permission to use the microphone. See Permissions.

Choosing the Stereo Channels #

Many audio devices have more than two input channels. An audio interface, for example, might have eight. A recording from Screenflick is stereo, so for each device you choose which of its channels is the left channel and which is the right.

To choose the channels to record from a microphone

  1. Choose the device in the microphone pop-up menu in the Record view.
  2. Click the button to the right of the pop-up menu. It's the one described as "Preview audio levels, and choose audio channels" in the screenshot above. A "Stereo Channels" window appears.
  3. Choose the channel number to use for "Left:", and the channel number to use for "Right:".

Both pop-up menus list every input channel of the device, numbered from 1. The window also has an "Input Level" meter, so you can see which channel the sound is coming in on.

Left and Right What you get
Two different channels, such as 1 and 2 A stereo recording, with one channel on each side.
The same channel for both, such as 3 and 3 A single microphone, heard equally on both sides.

A device with more than one channel starts out recording channels 1 and 2, and a device with one channel records that channel on both sides. Screenflick remembers the channels you choose for each device, so you only need to set them once for each microphone or audio interface you use.

Checking the Level #

While you're recording, the audio level meters in the Screenflick menu on the right side of the menu bar, which is red when recording, show what's being recorded. The meter shows whichever of the Left and Right channels is louder.
