Querious 5

The early release is here,
with extensive PostgreSQL support.

Version 5.0 beta · macOS 14+

Major new features

What's new in Querious 5

Rich PostgreSQL Features

Querious is an expert at MySQL, and now v5 is an expert at PostgreSQL also. Everything for defining structure and editing data, server views for index usage, diagnostics, replication status, and query analysis, import & export, and even a streamlined pg_dump and pg_restore for backups.

Query Assistant

Simply describe the query you need, and by using your exact tables, columns, and relational structure, the Query Assistant can create exactly the SQL you need — from the simple "I can't remember that SQL syntax" ones, all the way to the complex "I've lost track of how many joins I need" ones. Plus it's safe and private.

Fast Navigation, Following Data Through FKs

Select an order row, jump to its line items, then over to support tickets filed, then up to the account, back down to the orders, then… The new Jump sidebar takes you to the exact related rows in a single click.

Fix Messy Imports with Value Customization

When importing, convert date and number formats, compute values with SQL expressions, and decide what happens to empties. Dirty data goes in, clean rows come out!

JSON, JSON, JSON.

Export or Copy any table or rows to JSON, as an array of objects or bare values, or even a "table" object. Plus, select any rows and see the exact syntax-colored JSON in the sidebar, while being able to expand FK rows in-place.

Query Performance Analysis

Finding the query that's dragging a server down shouldn't take guesswork. The new Query Digest view groups statements into patterns and ranks them by the time and I/O they cost, while the Query Analyzer view takes any single query and lays out its execution plan so you can see exactly why it's expensive.

Diagnose Lock Contention

The new Locks view helps untangle the mystery of why a simple query is stuck waiting to even start by showing every blocked connection alongside whatever is blocking it. Zombie transactions stuck "open" stand out immediately instead of hiding among hundreds of idle threads.

Maximize Index Efficiency

Indexes are easy to add and easy to forget. Index Usage reveals which ones are justified, and which ones are just slowing down your writes by being redundant or unused. Take a focused look in a single schema's Structure view, or look at it from altitude in the Server-wide Index Usage view.

Diagnose Your Schema

Databases can have minor issues pop up over time, especially when migrating from dev to production. With Schema Diagnostics, scan for common issues related to: keys, indexes, character sets, legacy features, minor design issues, and maintenance.

Refined Server Views

InnoDB Status adds organized sections with a summary of key stats. Error Log shows error codes and subsystems and folds repeated messages together. Users has a new layout that's easier to use, with filtering by name or set permissions.

Relationship Clarity. No therapy required.

The relationship graph now has all-new layouts and options producing cleaner more logically-arranged tables, enhanced styling that's easier to follow, a minimap to orient you, smooth zoom and pan by swiping, and... re-positionable tables!

Table Columns, Rebuilt

Filter by name, sort by name or table order, and see every PK and FK at a glance. Enum and Set editing is even easier: cut, copy, paste, drag to reorder, and paste in multiple lines to add many values at once.

Fresh for Modern macOS

Querious has a refreshed interface that fits right in on macOS Tahoe and Golden Gate, plus you can now customize it more to make it yours: customize titlebar and connection tab displays, control sizes, list font sizes, spacing, and result row density to suit your style.

All-New Documentation

Querious 5 has extensive beautiful documentation, with images, diagrams, and keyboard shortcuts. Frankly, the goal is to be perfectly intuitive and never need documentation, but it's there when you need it, both in the Help menu and here on the website. And both are fully searchable!

Faster Where You Feel It

Open tabs faster. Switch views faster. Scroll big and wide tables smoothly. Dozens of improvements throughout views you already use, shape Querious up into an even better tool, in ways you notice every day.

About this early release

Worth the wait.

Work on Querious 5 began long ago (even while Querious 4 was still being updated constantly), and all that effort went into new foundations that bring extensive Postgres support, a much-improved MySQL experience, and a base for everything that comes next.

Unlike other apps that create a "Postgres tool" by putting a pretty veneer over a generic adapter, Querious 5's rich Postgres support comes from every corner of Querious being purpose-built for PostgreSQL from the ground up. And for the MySQL users who have been using Querious during the past 18 years, you'll be happy to know that same foundation has made the MySQL side even more capable, consistent, and precise in the process.

Beyond Querious itself, during the past year the Araelium Store and Account web backend has had major improvements allowing for much better team support, while also powering the new Query Assistant service, and getting ready for more services in the future. Pulling off this interconnected engineering effort took its time, but it's an exciting launch point for all the updates to come!

NewDatabase Relationship View

The Relationship View has been dramatically overhauled!

  • Three all-new layouts for better table arrangement, with customizable spacing.
  • Drag and reposition tables! Your custom positions are saved.
  • Rubberband selection for repositioning multiple tables at a time.
  • A new interactive minimap quickly orients you within the overall graph.
  • Zoom by swiping (scroll wheel) while holding option.
  • Pan by swiping (scroll wheel) as before, or command-drag.
  • Foreign Key edges now connect directly to the PK/FK fields.
  • Visual tweaks to improve clarity.
NewTable Content View
  • A new super-handy Relationships sidebar view displays tables related through PK/FK links (directly or as ancestors), and provides very fast jumping between them. For example: select an Order row, and quickly jump to that order's Account or LineItems.
  • The vertical form editor's two-column layout now has resizable columns (remembered per-table, double-click to reset), and a quick "Go to Column…" button.
  • Leave JSON columns unloaded by default with a new app preference/setting.
  • Customize specific columns to be Unloaded in the Table Content View Properties. Have a big column you never care about the values for? Set it to be Unloaded.
  • MySQL UUID type support with a new MySQL preference to interpret binary(16) as a UUID, and display it as a UUID string in results.
  • Performance optimizations so Table Content scrolling is much smoother in large lists.
  • Adds a preference to display row numbers next to each row.
  • Improves the appearance of conditional row highlighting.
NewStructure View

Table Columns

  • Filter the columns list by name.
  • Sort the columns list by name or by the table's natural column order.
  • Shows which columns are PK/FK. Clicking jumps to the related key.
  • New value list editor for enums and sets which is much more usable. Supports Cut/Copy/Paste/Select All, drag reordering, you can paste in multi-line text to insert multiple values, etc.
  • Specify MySQL column default values using an SQL expression.
  • Appearance improvements with better list resizing and wider spacing, Added/Removed/Modified columns now have coloring applied to their whole row to show the status, and the details area is now resizable.

Others

  • Modifying Table Indexes now highlights the index row to show it's been modified, and shows Apply and Revert buttons.
  • Modifying Table Foreign Keys now highlights the foreign key row to show it's been modified, and shows Apply and Revert buttons.
  • New layout for the Table Info view which is more organized with the sidebar.
  • The Function and Procedure structure view layout is more organized with the sidebar.
NewImport & Export, Duplicate

JSON

  • Database rows can now be copied to the clipboard as JSON.
  • The contents of a table can be exported to JSON, either as an object array, values array, or a table object, and either compact or pretty-printed.

CSV/Tab

  • When importing CSV/Tab, there is a new "Values" view, allowing customization of value conversion and defaults. If the source file has data in the wrong format, let Querious do some transformation to make it the right format before importing.
  • Convert date formats – (ISO/RFC/SQL/Unix Timestamp/Custom Format String/etc).
  • Convert numerical formats – (dot decimal vs comma decimal).
  • SQL expression Values – Use an expression to define the value to be imported, either to generate a new value or transform the file's field value.
  • Handle Empty values – For empty values in the file, specify if the imported value should be: Empty or a Default value.
  • Disable Foreign Keys – A new import option to avoid issues when INSERTs in the file are in the wrong order of foreign key dependencies.
  • Disable Unique Checks – A new import option to speed up imports when there are no duplicate keys.
  • Choose from a list of types supported by the server, when specifying the column type for a New Table created during import.

SQL

  • Improvements in MySQL and SQLite .sql file export to fix some minor inconsistencies. No one issue is major, but combined they level up the exporter's correctness.
  • Most significantly, the statements within the SQL file are ordered more correctly based on dependencies, even if unique and FK checks are disabled.
  • During MySQL export, it now releases the global read lock after creating an InnoDB snapshot, which lets other connections write to the tables during the export. Only if the tables being exported include a MyISAM table is the lock held for the duration.
  • Importing to the database no longer automatically creates a transaction, yielding full control over transactions to the sql file itself.

General Transfer and Duplicate

  • The import/export/transfer error window is now bigger and resizable, with a more clear display of the failed query, row, and log.
  • The import/export/transfer progress window is now wider and more readable, splitting status onto multiple lines.
  • Double-clicking the operation in the progress window will now reveal the exported file in Finder, or show the error. (Equivalent to clicking on the small "Reveal" button.)
NewGeneral, Appearance, Preferences
  • Requires macOS 13.2 or later
  • Refreshed user-interface, matching current macOS Tahoe and Golden Gate interface expectations. Querious now uses the new window toolbar and sidebar appearances, with new control sizing and spacing, and many little refinements all over. Querious now also uses a native right side "inspector" sidebar in several views.
  • Settings/Preference panels are now organized into groups.
  • There's an all-new update checker/panel which can display all previous versions, and can display multiple newer versions to choose from (if available).
  • All newly-added/modified passwords are saved to your Keychain as "synchronizable" passwords which will now be available in iCloud Keychain as well. Simply updating an existing saved connection will also move its password to be available in iCloud Keychain.
  • The View → Go to Previous/Next Editor menu items now use Cmd-Shift-comma/period by default for quick keyboard navigation between subviews like Columns, Indexes, etc.

Appearance Customization

  • Adds a new preference for turning on/off tinting of the titlebar with the connection color.
  • Adds a new setting for what's displayed in each connection tab: Connection color's swatch, connection icon, tinting with the color, name, host, etc
  • Change the size of buttons/labels/controls application-wide.
  • Set the font size of general lists, application-wide, and even choose an amount of extra spacing.
  • Result Row spacing options are now: Compact, Regular, and new "Large" for more breathing room.
NewURL Schemes

The URL scheme (querious://) is useful for integration into automated scripts and launcher systems, and has been enhanced in this version.

  • Querious now supports the "standard" mysql:// and postgresql:// URL schemes to connect to server. (This integrates Querious into Postgres.app for example.)
  • A new app preference lets you deny or request confirmation of every new connection to a server made by any URL.
  • querious://connect/new supports every connection setting, so advanced temporary connection setups are possible.
  • querious://connect/saved supports overriding the saved connections' database/schema/password values.
  • With the "query" parameter, you can have Querious automatically open and set the SQL in the Query view.
  • An opened connection can be assigned an "id", and later URL calls can refer to that same id.
  • Added a new querious://query action which will open the query in the Query view in an already-open (id=) connection.
  • querious:// now supports registering Querious with a team access key.
Misc New
  • When deleting a saved connection, it now confirms if you also want to delete the passwords for it or not. Previously it always deleted them.
  • Importing app settings (connections, preferences, color themes, etc) with "Replace existing settings" turned on, now asks for confirmation before actually replacing them.
Changes
  • Faster tab loading speed and switching between some views.
  • SQL Exporting: Improvements to the ordering of DROP/CREATE/INSERT statements, and schema objects as a whole, to avoid dependency issues, even if technically avoided by disabling FKs etc.
  • SQL Importing: Querious no longer creates a transaction before executing the file. Transactions are now left entirely up to the SQL file itself, to avoid issues with transaction nesting, silent errors, and premature commits.
  • The Duplicate schema object panel now sets the "database" field to the connection's default database when you select a different connection.
  • The old Artificial Foreign Keys feature that was in Querious since v1.0 has been removed. AFKs were intended for use with MyISAM tables which do not support actual Foreign Keys. While still potentially useful in rare circumstances, the vast majority of production databases now use InnoDB and removing AFKs makes it much easier to create features that rely on FKs.
  • The Schema → Structure → SQL Structure / Export view has been removed because it was effectively redundant. Use File → Export instead.
Fixes
  • Table Content search and sort are now saved as part of the navigation state.
  • The Table Content view now consistently applies the default PK sort order.
  • The vertical editor's filter now applies correctly when changing rows or the layout.
  • The keyboard shortcut (Ctrl-W) for closing a query tab in the Query view now works.
  • Error messages now always include the related query when there is one. (This was always intended, but the query was sometimes missing.)
  • From the Query or Server views, "Go To…" now reopens the Content view even when the table is already selected in the Content view's primary sidebar.
  • Fixes an issue where copying selected rows in the Table Content view (as CSV or JSON etc) would only load the "Unloaded" values for a single row, and not copy the remaining rows.
  • Fixes an issue where a "Duplicate" transfer might say it couldn't connect to the destination because it didn't have the password.
  • Hides the "Compression" option when copying rows to the clipboard because it was illogical to show.
  • The MySQL server Error Log was chopping off the message of the last entry.
  • SQL Exporting: MySQL SQL file exports now correctly turn on DISABLE KEYS.
  • SQL Exporting: Writes comments and line endings correctly in all cases.
  • SQL Exporting: Query results now omit "LOCK TABLE" when there is no named table available to lock.
  • SQL Exporting: MySQL data-only exports now include the USE statement when exporting multiple schemas' data.
  • SQL Exporting: MySQL exports now include DROP USER statements when that option is enabled.
  • SQL Exporting: Preserves an empty value in the last column of a row during row exporting instead of writing it as NULL.
  • SQL Exporting: MySQL exports now write NO_AUTO_VALUE_ON_ZERO to preserve 0-value IDs.
  • SQL Exporting: The SQL_MODE preservation written into the file now saves the actual mode to the temporary variable instead of NULL.
  • SQL Exporting: SQLite exports now apply ignore_check_constraints with the correct sense.
  • SQL Exporting: When exporting query results, it gets the table name (for the INSERTS) from the first column that has a table name, and now throws an error if none exists. Previously it would assume the first column always had a table name.
  • Importing: When importing to the database, a failed MySQL USE statement now correctly fails the entire import.
  • Importing: SQL files now properly support encodings other than UTF-8.
  • Importing: CSV/tab files now detect the Unicode BOM more accurately.
  • Importing saved connections which already exist can no longer accidentally delete the password.
  • Duplicating a saved connection no longer causes the original to forget its password (while the new one had it).
  • SQLite: Importing records into SQLite with "Insert Ignore" no longer fails with a SQL syntax error
  • SQLite: "Explain Query" now shows the query plan instead of either failing or showing bytecode.
  • SQLite: Truncating a SQLite table no longer fails with a SQL syntax error.
  • Fixes a number of small memory leaks.
  • Numerous other improvements for quality, stability, and minor issues.

Give Querious 5 a try.
